Scorpion by Phil Gilvin

WAR IS COMING, A WAR THAT COULD MEAN THE END OF THE REPUBLIC. BUT HOW CAN YOU DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT WHEN YOU’RE A CAPTIVE, SLAVING IN THE GUTS OF A BRUTAL PATROL SHIP?

Clara Perdue isn’t sure why she took Jack Pike’s place at the slave market. She isn’t sure why she saved another girl and volunteered for the Scorpion, a Coastforce ship that plies the Channel, murdering refugees and raiding the villages along the coast. But when she meets Xavi, another slave, she feels emotions she’s never felt before.

Meanwhile, Jack Pike has taken Clara’s parents to safety, and as he tries to track her down he finds an unexpected ally. But how can they find Clara?

Can Clara escape somehow? And, even if she can, how can she stop the war?

Review

‘Scorpion’ is the third book in the amazing ‘Truth Sisters’ series and is packed full of action from the get-go! You probably could read this book as a stand-alone but I would recommend reading the whole series to get a better sense of the world and the characters.

We find the two main characters, Jack and Clara, once again separated and looking to find one another. Clara had taken Jack’s place in the slave market and has ended up on the Scorpion, a boat prowling the English Channel. Jack has settled Clara’s parents and is now heading back to find Clara and bring her back to them.

The author has once again managed to writing a truly captivating book. The scenes on board the Scorpion were claustrophobic and evocative. The characters are always well fleshed out I love Jack and Clara’s relationship, they always end up coming back to one another. Their story is very realistic and thankfully not cheesy at all! Once again the world-building and dystopian feel were on point and it was very easy to visualise all the scenes in the book.

This is the final book in the story but I would have read a few more very easily. The narrative has been wound up brilliantly but I can see there being scope for more!

Let me know if you pick this one up!
